The Giant Bees were monstrous insects which featured in Cy Endfield's 1961 fantasy creature feature Mysterious Island. They were brought to life using the spectacular visual effects talents of Ray Harryhausen [1].
Description[]
As their name might suggest, the bees looked like honeybees, only far larger than any insect ever to have lived on Earth before. They had established their hive in an expansive mountainside cave.
It seems likely that the bees were created by scientist Captain Nemo as part of his philanthropic vision to alleviate world hunger. They were presumably wiped out when the island's volcano erupted.
History[]
While attempting to escape from the giant bees, two of the island's castaways sought refuge in a nearby cave. Unfortunately for them, they came to realise that this was in fact the bees' hive. Luckily they were able to escape through the honeycombs and found themselves in a colossal flooded cave- in which a mysterious submarine lay at anchor…
