Jason and the Argonauts is a 1963 mythological fantasy film directed by Don Chaffey and featuring special effects by stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen. Written by Beverley Cross and Jan Read, it was based on the Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece.
Synopsis[]
In an effort to overthrow the wicked King of Thessaly Pelias, the young hero Jason embarks upon a quest to retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece of Colchis. Ably assisted by the goddess Hera and a crew of hardy sailors including the legendary demigod Hercules, the crew brave the dangerous ocean to bring back their prize, battling various monstrous enemies on their travels including Harpies, the Hydra, a cadre of reanimated skeletons, and even the mighty automaton Talos.

- Jason and the Argonauts was developed under the working title of Jason and the Golden Fleece [1].
- The film featured Patrick Troughton as the blind prophet Phineus before taking on his most iconic role as the Second Doctor in British science fiction series Doctor Who. Troughton would later go on to play Melanthius in another of Harryhausen's films, the 1977 swashbuckling fantasy Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger [2].
