The Minoton was an automaton shaped to resemble a bronze minotaur which appeared in Sam Wanamaker's 1977 mythological fantasy film Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.

Overview[]

The Minoton was created by Queen Zenobia to be her most loyal servant. Dedicated to preventing Sinbad from fulfilling his quest, it was powered by a golden clockwork heart and possessed incredible strength. It was ultimately crushed by an enormous piece of masonry when it removed the block from a temple wall to allow its mistress access to the interior. This was fortunate for Sinbad and his men, as they appeared to have no effective way to combat the creature.

Behind the Scenes[]

The stop-motion effects for the Minoton were designed and realised by legendary visual effects creator Ray Harryhausen, while in the live-action segments it was portrayed by British actor Peter Mayhew [1], although he was not credited to the role in the film itself [2]. Mayhew is best known as the actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, taking on the role in every live-action appearance of the character until his retirement from acting due to health reasons in 2015 [3].
