Ornithomimus was a medium-sized dinosaur which made a brief appearance in the 1969 fantasy-western film The Valley of Gwangi. Special effects for the creature were created by stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen [1].

The Valley of Gwangi[]

When a group of cowboys investigated a forbidden valley in search of prehistoric beasts, one of the creatures they encountered was an Ornithomimus. Giving chase in an effort to capture the speedy dinosaur, it appeared to have outran the men; unfortunately for the poor Ornithomimus it had unwittingly put itself in the path of the valley's most deadly predator: the mighty Allosaurus Gwangi.

Behind the Scenes[]

The Ornithomimus was the first dinosaur to be seen in The Valley of Gwangi, although it was not the first creature, with both an Eohippus and Pteranodon making their appearances earlier in the film.

In the Real World[]

Ornithomimus was a fast, nimble theropod dinosaur believed to have possibly been omnivorous [2]. Existing in the Late Cretaceous period [2], it would have been roughly contemporaneous with the Styracosaurus [3] depicted in The Valley of Gwangi, but not the Allosaurus Gwangi itself [4].
