Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema was an exhibition of the works of stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen which took place in Edinburgh, Scotland in the early 2020s.

Overview[]

Timed to coincide with what would have been Harryhausen's 100th birthday, the Titan of Cinema exhibition was hosted by the National Galleries of Scotland at the Gallery of Modern Art. It was originally scheduled to display from October 2020 to September 2021; however, due to its phenomenal success, its run was extended to February 2022. It is to date the largest exhibition of Harryhausen's work to have been shown anywhere in the world.

The exhibition consisted of movie props and memorabilia from across Harryhausen's career, which spanned three decades, and included the original models for many of his most iconic works, with extensive restoration work undertaken to ensure that they were as close as possible to their original condition.

Tie-In Media[]

Ray Harryhausen's daughter Vanessa wrote a book, also titled Titan of Cinema, as a companion piece to the exhibition. The book featured contributions from those who had known and worked with Harryhausen senior, as well as previously-unseen images of many of his earlier creations.

As part of its Culture in Quarantine series, the BBC covered the exhibition in an iPlayer documentary; as of June 2024, the episode is unavailable [1].
