Ray Harryhausen's Creatures Wiki

Stegosaurus is a dinosaur that which appeared in the 1956 documentary film The Animal World. It was brought to life using the stop-motion animation talents of special effects artist Ray Harryhausen.

Overview[]

In the film's prehistoric sequence's prologue, a Stegosaurus skeleton on display was one the few dinosaur skeletons seen, as the narrator described it as "an introvert by a relative".

In the prehistoric sequence, a Stegosaurus was seen grazing, whereas its habitat was near a cliff, a scary place for a dinosaur to be near, when came out of nowhere, a Ceratosaurus ambushes the armored herbivore, engaging it in a death-match, but proved no match for the powerful predator and was quickly dispatched, however after the Stegosaurus was killed, another Ceratosaurus, having been attracted to the corpse, engages the first Ceratosaurus, causing the two Ceratosauruses to compete over the food, which ultimately resulted between the two carnivores falling into the water and drowning.

Later, another Stegosaurus was seen in panicked flight, attempting to make its escape after the eruption of a volcano.

Behind the Scenes[]

The design of the Stegosaurus was based on a Charles Knight painting (citation needed); however, this image has since been proven to be scientifically inaccurate, having twice the number of spikes on its thagomizer than the real animal possessed.
