Vanessa Harryhausen is a British author and illustrator, and the only child of stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen. Growing up surrounded by the trappings of the industry, she possesses a unique insight into her father's work, and has done a great deal to bring to light some of his more obscure creations, as well as promote the furtherance of the stop-motion process as a whole.
Overview[]
Vanessa grew up deeply immersed in the special effects industry as a result of her father's passion. She was present on set for all of his films from The Valley of Gwangi in 1969 to Clash of the Titans in 1981 [1]. Later, she served as a trustee of the Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation along with, amongst others, Caroline Munro, the British actress who played Margiana in 1973's The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
Since Harryhausen's death in 2013, Vanessa has continued to serve of the board of the Foundation, and has helped to organise major exhibitions of her father's work in across the globe, including the largest ever in Edinburgh, Scotland, which ran for over a year. To accompany this, she wrote Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema, a book which offers some insight into Ray's personal life, as well as never-before-seen images of some of his personal projects and uncompleted work.
